Dugong Project: PhD opportunities

A consortium of institutions (see below) is beginning a multi-year study of the occurrence, numbers and identity of dugongs in the Western Indian Ocean (Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya and Seychelles). We have an opportunity for students at the PhD level (though we will consider MSc).  You will enrol at a local (your own country) University, though there may be an opportunity to read through a University in another country. We have scholarships available, enough to pay for your tuition, field work and a small stipend.  If selected you will be part of an important and interesting conservation effort and you will, if you work hard, receive a PhD.

For more information please contact: Dr. V G Cockcroft – vic@dugongs.org

The DUGONG consortium members are:

- Kenya Wildlife Services & Kenya Marine and Fisheries Institute (Kenya)

- Zanzibar Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries & Institute of Marine Sciences, and Sea Sense (Tanzania)

- Seychelles Islands Foundation

- Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Mozambique)

- Mammal Research Institute, University of Pretoria and Centre for Dolphin Studies, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (South Africa)
