WIOMSA Membership
Membership to WIOMSA as Student, Individual, or Associate:
Student: Open to individuals who are nationals of any of the member states of the Region and registered as a student at an educational institution recognized as such by WIOMSA.
Individual: open to marine scientists and other professionals who are nationals of the countries of the Region involved in marine scientific and related activities in the Region.
Associate: open to marine scientists and other professionals from outside the Region involved in activities contributing to the objectives of the Association.
Membership to WIOMSA as an Institution:
Institutional: open to any institution, company, agency, corporation and organization involved in activities furthering the aims of WIOMSA and whose objectives are not in conflict with the aims of the Association.
Membership to WIOMSA as a Corporate Company:
Corporate: As a subcategory of institutional membership, open to any private sector or business involved in activities furthering the aims of WIOMSA and whose objectives are not in conflict with the aims of the Association.
Membership Period/Fees
- Membership in WIOMSA will be for a period of two years, renewable thereafter and fees are paid annually or bi-annually.
- Membership shall be paid at the time of application for the first annual period
- For current members they will be a grace period of 3 months for the payment of fees
Award Memberships:
Fellow membership: Awarded by WIOMSA to scientists and others in recognition of outstanding work or significant contribution to marine science research in the region.
Honorary membership: May be conferred by WIOMSA upon individuals who have rendered a notable service to marine science development in the Region.
WIOMSA Membership Benefits:
1. Eligibility for WIOMSA MASMA, MARG and commissioned Research Programs.
2. Eligibility to be elected to the Wiomsa board, Committees and task forces.
3. Special rate for the WIOMSA Journal: US150, a savings of US 100
4. Subsidized Registration fee for WIOMSA Bi annual Symposia.
5. Direct emailing of WIOMSA News Brief 4 times a year.
6. Invitation to WIOMSA Special events
7. Eligibility to submit abstracts to WIOMSA Journal
8. Special Membership certificate and/or card
9. Subsidized rates to attend WIOMSA partner events, courses, seminars etc
10. Subsidized rates to attend WIOMSA events, courses, workshops and events
11. Use of the WIOMSA logo subject to WIOMSA logo use rules and regulations.
12. Dedicated access by log in password to members only area on the WIOMSA web site.
Member’s only area: By logging in with your Member ID and assigned password, you will be able to;
- Get the latest WIOMSA Member News and information
- Check the status of your membership
- Update your membership profile
- Access and/or Submit Peer Reviewed Articles or abstracts
- Add publications, thesis, abstracts
- Search for other members by name, country, areas of interests etc
- Send individual or group e-mail message to other members
- View online version of WIOMSA Journal
- Get the most current Issue of WIOMSA Newsbrief

Members can pay their membership fees by:
- Banker's Check in US dollars made out in favour of WIOMSA to be mailed in.
Check to be made payable to Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association
- Direct bank to bank transfer-suitable mostly for institutions
- Cash in local currency or check in local currency given to/or mailed directly to the respective country coordinators
Member Rules & Regulations
Rights and Obligations of Members:
Each member of the Association shall have rights and perform such duties as may be prescribed by the General Assembly of the Association, including but not limited to the following:
- Participate fully in the activities of the Association.
- Avail him/herself of the facilities of the Association.
- Undertake such obligations and duties as may be assigned by the General Assembly or Board of Trustees
- Abide by the terms of this Constitution which shall be the basic guide for the operation of the Association.
- Members of all categories shall enjoy the privileges of the Association.
- All Members are entitled to vote (one person one vote).
Termination of Membership:
- A person shall cease to be a member of the Association upon his/her death.
- A person shall cease to be a member upon his/her own decision, expressed in writing to the Executive Secretary to withdraw membership.
- Any person who without any reasonable cause ceases to continue to participate in the activities of the Association or ceases to pay membership subscription fees shall cease to be a member.
- A person shall cease to be a member of the Association because of misconduct detrimental to the Association.
- The resignation of any Member shall be communicated to the Assembly as soon as is practicable.
